Under Armour has not been a brand that many would associate immediately with running shoes. That does not imply that the brand does not produce running shoes worth take note of. On the contracy, Under Armour has won over my mind with its Sonic series. Its product specification in the market might seems dated but it is nevertheless a trustworthy pair I have till date.

Recently, Under Armour has released a number of updates to their products. In this post, we will cover them. All three products kept to their previous marketing pitch as well as use cases in Under Armour portfolio.

UA Sonic 7

The Sonic 7 is the go-to for lightweight and supportive option. The Sonic 7 has the most obvious design change from its predecessor. The main change comes from its upper and its midsole design. Under Armour has kept the midsole technology the same – UA HOVR. Overall, the Sonic 7 adopted a simpler design. Other key updates include:

  1. A change in outsole to One-piece rubber outsole.
  2. Lighter stated weight of 9.1 oz (257 grams) compared to 9.9 oz (280 grams) in its previous verison.
  3. A triple jacquard upper compared to the engineered mesh upper.

US Infinite Pro 2

The Infinite Pro 2 occupies the middle ground with its 2 different midsole technologies – a UA HOVR+ as well EVA as the carrier foam. The carrier foam is not confirmed to be HOVR. Here Under Armour has adopted changes mainly to the upper from a engineered wrap knit to engineered mesh upper. A key change observed is the reduced weight from 11.5 oz (326 grams) to 10.8 oz (306 grams) in the UA Infinite Pro 2.

UA Infinite Elite 2

The Infinite Elite 2 is the top of line for Under Armour max stack running shoes. The Elite 2, as per the first version, has a full length HOVR+ midsole. Outrunning everyone seems to be the goal of the Elite 2 by keeping legs fresh over long distance.

The Infinite Elite 2 has a bigger update with its upper and midsole designs. The updated midsole design remains of ASICS new Gel-Nimbus 27 with its horizontal line design. Its upper design is almost a copy with the Infinite Pro which does not look amazing. But its weight dropped significantly by 13% from 11.5 oz (326 grams) to 10.0 oz (283 grams).

Key Takeaways

From Cool & Unique to Average in Upper Design

All three previous generation products had distinctive and cool designs for its upper. The new iteration felt like a cost-cutting exercise in Under Armour. The Infinite Pro 2 and Elite 2 are problems considering what Under Armour’s competitiors have been coming out with.

Simplification & Reducing in Weight

The common themes among all 3 products are the simplification they gotten and the reduction in weight. Weight reduction ranges from 6% to 13% which I believe comes from great effort by the team. The gap between Under Armour and its competitors has started to close up. The same cannot be said for its design.

Under Armour released their plan end 2024 which signalled a stronger Fall collection this year. I hope that will be true seeing this update.

What do you think of Under Armour’s new products that just hit the market?
