Introduction

In this series, we will explain and breakdown the “Workhorse” running shoes from each brand. The goal is to let you know what are your options before you spend your money. These are the products you want to be informed as you put in your miles and money.

Understanding the Puma’s Workhorse” Lineup

Puma has quietly become one of the most innovative brands for daily miles. By dropping the retail price of their flagship daily trainer while upgrading the tech, they have created a lineup that is hard to beat for value. This is especially true in Singapore where their PUMAGRIP outsole is a necessity for wet pavements.

The Velocity Nitro 4: The Logic-Defying Upgrade

  • Price: 179 SGD (Reduced from 199 SGD in previous versions although in US the price increased)
  • Weight: 245 grams
  • Drop: 10mm (26mm – 36mm)
  • Midsole: NITROFOAM (Aliphatic TPU-tuned)

Version 3 was average at best in my view. The ride was firmer and less fun than version 2, despite having more stack. Puma fixed this in version 4 by fundamentally changing the construction. Here is what you need to know:

  • 100% Full-Length Nitro: They removed the firm “EVA” carrier from version 3. Now, the entire midsole is supercritical NITROFOAM™. This restores the “sink-in” comfort and makes the transition from heel to toe feel energetic and smooth.
  • The Vibe: It has evolved into a legitimate performance tool. It’s soft enough for recovery but has the “pop” required for your faster pace interal training.
  • The Clincher: For only 10 SGD more than the entry-level Electrify, you get a lighter shoe with vastly superior foam. It’s the easiest upgrade in the running market.

The ForeverRun Nitro 2: The “Guided Assurance” Cruiser

  • Price: 229 SGD
  • Weight: 274 grams
  • Drop: 10mm (28mm – 38mm)
  • Midsole: Dual-Density NITROFOAM (Aliphatic TPU)

This is a premium daily trainer with a “hint of stability.” It is for the runner who wants the soft Nitro feel but needs the shoe to keep them centered during long miles.

  • Dual-Density Nitro: Unlike other models, this uses a “co-molded” Nitro setup. It has a soft Nitro core for bounce, surrounded by a firmer Nitro rim for guidance.
  • The Vibe: It feels like “lane assist” for your feet. It isn’t stiff or intrusive like traditional stability shoes; it just offers a wider, more planted platform that prevents your form from collapsing when you get tired.
  • Best Use Case: Long training blocks and recovery days where protection is the priority.

The Electrify Nitro 3: The “Rear-Weighted” Specialist

Note: the Electrify Nitro 4 is not widely available in Singapore but you can still find them for womens and in other countries.

  • Price: 169 SGD
  • Weight: 275 grams
  • Drop: 10mm (25mm – 35mm)
  • Midsole: NITROFOAM™ (Heel) / PROFOAMLITE (Forefoot – EVA)

This is a legit running shoe with a unique “split” personality: Nitro foam in the heel for soft landings, and ProFoam Lite (firm EVA) in the forefoot for a stable push-off.

  • The Reality Check: While it’s a solid shoe for heavy heel strikers who like a firm toe-off, the pricing is its biggest hurdle. At 169 SGD, it is technically “overpriced” compared to the Velocity Nitro 4, which offers full-length super-foam for just 10 SGD more.

Puma’s current lineup rewards the runner who looks past the price tag:

  • The Winner: The Velocity Nitro 4 is the standout. It fixes the firm-ride issues of the previous generation and offers a premium, full-length TPU experience for a price that is nearly entry-level.
  • The “Safety” Pick: If you prefer a more stable or guided ride, the ForeverRun Nitro 2 is an incredible deal when found on sale, offering premium foam with high-end support.
  • The “Dropoff”: The Electrify Nitro 4 while part of Puma’s offering is in a strange position in their portfolio. There is no need to consider the Electrify Nitro at this stage.

What do you think, which will be your top choice? We hope you found this article useful in helping you select your next daily trainer. Till next time, just keep running.
